Megennis delivers impressive performance at RallyX in Höljes

Seventeen-year-old American rallycross driver George Megennis delivered an impressive performance in the opening two rounds of the RallyX season in Sweden, held at the legendary Holjes circuit.

Using the event to build on experience gained through his maiden rallycross season in Nitro Rallycross’ NRX NEXT category last year, Megennis re-joined #YellowSquad to race in the RallyX weekend, taking on drivers far more familiar with the challenging venue.

Megennis built his pace through the opening round on Saturday, and set a best time of third overall in qualifying. With more hard work overnight to seek areas for improvement ahead of round two on Sunday, Megennis left the starting blocks on a flyer on Sunday morning, winning all of his races on track and setting second fastest time in two of three qualifying sessions, driving against some of the most experienced and successful Supercar Lites drivers in history.

Having qualified second overall, Megennis then stormed to semi-final victory, but, having lightly touched a course marker, was handed a five-second penalty by the stewards, and he just missed a place on the final grid.

The result wasn’t what driver or team showed was possible through Sunday’s competition, where victory was certainly on the cards, but Megennis left satisfied knowing the pace was there to win, despite competing against drivers with far more experience of Scandinavian rallycross circuits.

“This was a weekend filled with ups and downs for me. In round one I was still very new to the track and struggled early in the day to find pace. In the afternoon I picked it up but wasn’t able to convert that in the semi-finals into a top three. Overall I was slightly disappointing with the day, but I knew I had the pace for day two.

On Sunday I was fast from the get-go, winning all of my heat races and starting on pole for semi-final 2. However even with a semi-final win and the pace to win the final, the penalty meant I couldn’t start the final. Thank you so much to the whole team, the car was perfect and the coaching advise was brilliant all weekend. We absolutely had the pace to win, but we’ll get ‘em next time.”

“George was really impressive in his first race at Holjes. It’s a very special track, and we knew that he was so excited to go there as he is such a fan of rallycross, but it is not easy either. However, after only a few laps he could match the very experienced front-runners.
Getting up to speed on a new track quickly showed how his talent and detailed preparation together worked very well. In the end we didn’t get the result we wanted or deserved, but there are so many positives to take from the weekend. George was many times among the top guys and the fastest on track, and he used all of the experience he gained in his first season with us last year. I’m sure he will continue to work hard and improve even more for coming races, which is very promising for the future.”
