Rising American rallycross star George Megennis embarks on a rallycross pilgrimage this week as he joins #YellowSquad to race in the opening two rounds of the RallyX campaign at the legendary Holjes circuit in Sweden.
17-year-old Megennis entered the rallycross world with a bang last year, first making his debut at Arvika in Sweden, the final round of the 2021 RallyX season, and immediately impressing with his pace in the Supercar Lites division.
Then, together with #YellowSquad, he undertook a full assault on the inaugural Nitro Rallycross Championship in America, competing in the NRX Next category.
Despite facing competitors with far more experience on a range of new and challenging circuits, New Yorker Megennis was straight on the pace and won the second race in the first Nitro RX weekend at the Utah Motor Sport Campus. In a season of highs and lows, the young driver finished on the podium a further four times across the 10 rounds, to be fourth overall in the competitive series.
With his full 2022 plans yet to be confirmed, Megennis, a self-confessed rallycross nerd, is returning to the #YellowSquad fold for the opening RallyX weekend, held at one of the most prestigious rallycross venues on the entire planet.
As part of the #YellowSquad line-up, Megennis will continue to race under the leadership of Team Principal Kevin Hansen and Team Manager Eric Färén.
Free practice takes place on Friday evening (May 13) at the Värmland Circuit, before the two rounds are held on Saturday (May 14) and Sunday (May 15).
George Megennis – #YellowSquad SuperCar Lites driver
“It’s amazing to work with #YellowSquad and the Hansen family again. They’re a fantastic family, the whole team is knowledgeable and so good at what they do.
I chose to run Holjes because it’s a legendary track and it’s always been a dream of mine to race there. It looks very fun with all the crests and big curbs. You have to be very sendy but under control to be quick, so I hope this track will play to my strengths. As a rallycross nerd I have always fantasised about racing at Holjes – I have watched hundreds of hours of race video, onboards and broadcasts so hopefully that will help me get up to speed.
My goal for this weekend is to finish every race and get as much track time and experience as I can. Many of my competitors have grown up in Sweden and have been driving Holjes for years, so I know I’m coming in on the back foot, but I’m not going to let that disparage my hopes. It just means I have to work harder and try to get up to speed more quickly than everyone else. This will be one of the biggest challenges of my racing career and I’m really looking forward to it. I’d like to thank Dirtfish, #YellowSquad and the entire Hansen Motorsport family for their support.”
Eric Färén – #YellowSquad Team Manager
“It’s very exciting for the whole team to have George back in the car for Holjes, and also to be coming back over here to Europe. Last year he was really impressive in his first taste of the classic Nordic rallycross tracks when he made his debut in Arvika, and we had a great season in America too. Holjes is always a special race and I’m sure George will enjoy driving there. He puts in a lot of work, so he is ready for the fight, and we will continue to help him as much as we can. The whole team can’t wait for the season to get started!”
